Fretspire Privacy Policy
Effective: November 5, 2026
This policy covers the Fretspire apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux, and the theme gallery on fretspire.com.
The short version
Fretspire does not collect, sell or share any personal data. It has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The only thing stored is a theme you choose to share in the theme gallery, with the name you type for it.
What the app does with your files
- Files you open (tablature and MIDI files) are read on your device and stay on your device.
- Scores you save are written only where you choose (for example, the Files app or a folder on your computer).
- Fretspire keeps an automatic recovery copy of the open score on your device, so unsaved work survives a crash. It never leaves the device.
- Your settings (colour theme, view options, sound choices) are stored on your device only.
Network
Fretspire works offline and sends nothing about you or your songs to us or to third parties. The connections it makes:
- At every start the desktop app asks fretspire.com whether a new version is out and whether Pro features are open. These requests carry no account, song or device identifier; like any web request they show your IP address to the server, which does not store it.
- If you connect GitHub in Project History, your songs go to the GitHub repository you choose, under GitHub's own policy. Nothing goes there unless you connect it.
- Browsing, installing or sharing a theme from the theme gallery connects to fretspire.com; see Theme gallery.
- Downloading an installer from fretspire.com is counted per platform. To count each visitor once a day, a one-way hash of the IP address and date is kept for 24 hours; the IP address itself is not stored.
- A link you tap opens a web page in your browser; that page is governed by its own website's policy.
Desktop app only: guitar input, MIDI keyboard and diagnostic log
- The desktop app can record tablature from a guitar plugged into an audio interface and from a MIDI keyboard. The sound and the MIDI notes are analysed on your computer while you record and are never sent anywhere. Nothing is recorded until you start a take, and the operating system asks for your permission before the app may use an audio input.
- To help find bugs, the desktop app writes a diagnostic log on your computer, including a copy of the guitar sound heard while recording. It stays in the log folder on your computer and is never uploaded. You can send it to us yourself by e-mail when reporting a problem, and delete it at any time.
Theme gallery
- When you share a theme on fretspire.com (from the website or from the app), the theme file, its name and the author name you type are stored on our server. After a quick review the theme is shown publicly in the gallery, where anyone can download it. Leave the author name empty to be listed as "Anonymous".
- To limit how many themes can be uploaded from one place, a one-way hash of your IP address plus the date is kept for 24 hours. Your IP address itself is not stored, and the hash cannot be turned back into it.
- Downloads are counted per theme. Who downloaded a theme is not stored.
- To have a theme you shared removed, e-mail fretspire@proton.me with its name.
Children
Fretspire collects no data from anyone, including children under 13. A theme shared in the gallery contains only what the person sharing it typed.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new effective date.
